Standing Tall

STANDING TALL takes inspiration from the theme of PINK and my current research exploring the individuality characteristics of trees. I have created a forest of human trees, each with their own characteristics, as like humans, no tree is the same. The artist George Rouault said ‘A tree against the sky possesses the same interest, the same character, the same expression as the figure of a human’.

This forest is made from twenty hand constructed, hand dyed and hand sewn vessels made from cotton organza and thread. They sit on an embroidered cotton gauze base.

STANDING TALL aims to explore ideas around conformity and societies expectations. Creating pink trees challenges ideas of colour conformity and makes connections with the female and male form. How can we be an individual as well as respecting differences in others, and are these vessels seen as trees or abstractions of the human figure?
